A new bill aimed at expanding food assistance in New York is making its way through the Senate floor.
The bill would allow people enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to use their benefits at restaurants.
As of now, the program does not allow people to purchase hot foods or foods that will be eaten in a store.
This new bill making its way through the Senate would allow SNAP recipients to use their benefits for prepared or hot food from approved restaurants, deli’s, and grocery stores at reduced prices.
This could be a great incentive to help struggling businesses while also helping provide hot meals to people.
Meanwhile, New surveys from the Census Bureau suggest that the two most recent rounds of aid helped Americans to pay their bills while also improving financial stress.
Among households with children, reports of food shortages fell 42 percent from January through April, while financial instability fell by 43 percent.
Among all households, frequent anxiety and depression fell by more than 20 percent.
