Federal officials from the US Secret Service have offered an update on their efforts to recover unemployment benefits stolen from the government by fraudsters and scammers.

They recently explained that in the past year, the department has opened 690 cases regarding unemployment insurance fraud, accounting for millions of dollars in stolen stimulus funds.

Larry Turner, the acting inspector general for the Labor Department, explained: “The amount of unemployment insurance benefits provided in response to the pandemic is unprecedented in the history of the nation’s unemployment insurance system.”

Secret Service Director James Murray stated: “We’ve probably made more than 120 arrests specific only to fraud. This is not something that is going to go away. We’re going to be addressing fraud for many years to come.”

It’s great to see these vital unemployment benefits recovered by the government, and I hope that they can finally distribute these stimulus funds to the deserving Americans that need them most.
