Why Elon Musk’s Starlink is About to Change the Internet Forever
SpaceX, as you already know, is Elon Musk’s company, known for its outer space exploits. They’ve worked with NASA, as well as many other companies, launching satellites for them. However, these endeavors are proving to NOT QUITE cut it when it comes to funding his master plan: taking the human race to Mars.
So, Musk did what businessmen do and created a way for SpaceX to earn a greater profit… by providing high-speed internet across the globe. This project is known as “Starlink.” Starlink uses satellites beaming light-speed internet back to Earth, something Musk believes could earn them $50 billion in revenue per year.
Starlink already has a valuation of about $100 billion in its short lifespan.
Musk’s plan is to put a whole network of satellites around the globe, with 1,740 of them already floating around up there. Starlink’s satellites will orbit much closer to Earth than other internet or data providing satellites, which means information will hit your computer at about the speed of light.
This is revolutionary. Starlink is said to provide internet faster than fiber optics. Right now, Google fiber (which uses fiber optics) is the fastest on Earth right now. It spits out one gigabit per second, whereas most internet connections hover around 50 megabits per…
