A recent report from Yahoo Money shows that nearly 6 million Americans, or 2 in 5, have not been able to receive their unemployment benefits due to being caught up in the bureaucracy, ineligibility notices, or system backlogs.
Andrew Stettner, from The Century Foundation, explained: “Our core state unemployment benefits program was not ready for this pandemic.”
He continued: “They are still really struggling to keep up with the volume, and they’re still dealing with the backlogs.”
Stettner continued: “They’ve been trying to pay the people that they could pay easily and disqualify the ones that get disqualified easily. Then everyone else was forced to wait.”
Like so many of you have described in the comments, this is an issue that is impacting millions of struggling Americans, and I just hope that reports like these can get unemployment systems moving a little quicker and more effectively provide funds to people in need.
Meanwhile, Shark Tank villain, aka “Mr. Wonderful,” Kevin O’Leary, made some interesting comments on CNBC yesterday about where he wants to see stimulus funds spent.
Instead of promoting small businesses through PPP or SBA loans, O’Leary is adamant that the money is used elsewhere.
Mr. Wonderful explained: “What I would like to see is zero PPP, no more for businesses.”
He continued: “Those employees that are being displaced, let’s provide unemployment insurance for them. But zero dollars to the shareholders of those businesses.”
He closed by explaining that stimulus for companies should be over, as: “we’re done providing free money from the sky.”
I completely agree with the Shark and hope that when another stimulus package is finally announced, it contains ample extended enhanced unemployment benefits to help us weather the rest of this 2020 storm.
Finally, we’ve talked about their efforts on the channel before, but it was recently announced that IKEA sent the state of Texas a check for $4.9 million to help with unemployment insurance.
Paying the equivalent of the money that it cost the state to furlough IKEA employees months ago, IKEA Retail U.S. President Javier Quiñones explained in a letter to Texas Governor Greg Abbott:
“At the beginning of the pandemic, IKEA had to make the difficult decision to close its retail stores. This included furloughing some of the IKEA US retail workers for periods of one to eight weeks.”
He continued: “state unemployment benefits helped our co-workers during a difficult time. We now have a better understanding of the impact on our business, and we’ve decided to ‘pay it forward’ in our local communities.”
Once again kudos to IKEA, thanks for your cool furniture, tasty meatballs and especially for donating nearly $5 million to unemployment efforts.
