With the weekly jobs report comes another update on the states with the highest unemployment rates across America.
For the first time since that thing out there began, all 50 states are below double-digit unemployment numbers.
Hawaii still leads the nation, with a 9.9% unemployment rate.
Next is California, with 8.9%, and jumping into 3rd is New Mexico, with an unemployment rate of 8.5%.
My home state of Nevada is 4th with 8.2% and 5th in Massachusetts with 7.0%.
While it’s encouraging to see unemployment rates continue to drop across the country, millions of Americans continue to struggle with finding a job and collecting unemployment benefits.
Meanwhile, with the initial unemployment and continuing claims decreasing across America, these weekly job reports, unfortunately, do not describe the entire unemployment situation accurately.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans are returning to work, lowering the unemployment rate, but many are also not claiming unemployment benefits for a number of different reasons.
Thousands of out of work Americans are falling through the cracks, or have fully exhausted their unemployment benefits, which takes them off the unemployment rate, but not on the employment rate.
Michele Evermore, a senior policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, explained: “There are tons of opportunities for people to fall off benefits.”
As so many of you have described in the comments, these unemployment systems are far from perfect, so be wary of any statistics that offer a rosy and incredibly strong picture of the current unemployment situation in America.
Finally, one of President-Elect Joe Biden’s doctors on his virus task force made some interesting comments about paying workers to stay at home for 4–6 weeks, or universal unemployment.
Dr. Michael Osterholm explained: “We could pay for a package right now to cover all of the wages, lost wages for individual workers, for losses to small companies, to medium-sized companies or city, state, county governments. We could do all of that.”
He continued: “If we did that, then we could lockdown for 4 to 6 weeks.”
Elise Gould, the senior economist with the Economic Policy Institute, agrees with Osterholm’s plan, adding: “Health experts have been talking about this all along, to stay home and make it financially viable for people to do so.”
This universal unemployment for 4–6 weeks could help us crush this virus, especially with a vaccine making its way across America in the coming year.
