According to a state judge on Friday, Indiana must continue to pay PUA benefits to roughly 250,000 residents until the lawsuit challenging the early termination of the compensation is decided.

Jobless workers filed a lawsuit earlier this month challenging Republican Governor Eric Holcomb’s order, to cease the payments as of June 19th.

In his ruling Friday, Judge John Hanley said a “preponderance of evidence” demonstrates that Indiana’s decision to end the benefits early violates state law.

He stated, “A loss of housing or medical care and the inability to provide food, shelter, and adequate childcare for a family constitute irreparable harm pending the resolution of this cause of action.”

Indiana is among 26 states that are dropping at least one of the three unemployment insurance programs Congress passed in March and extended twice to support people.

We are so glad that someone recognizes that ending benefits early causes more harm than good.

Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines is hiking its minimum wage to $15 an hour as travel inches back.
