A number of leading economists recently wrote a statement released by the Economic Strategy Group, urging Congress to pass another stimulus package before the end of 2020.
Their letter states: “We urge Congress to enact legislation that focuses on the core measures necessary to provide additional fiscal relief as quickly as possible and no later than the end of this calendar year.”
These economists laid out their preferred stimulus items, including: “Support for individuals and families, income relief for those who are unemployed, enhanced benefits to assist households struggling to cover food costs and measures to back those facing eviction and homelessness due to income loss.
They also noted: “The CARES Act that was passed with bipartisan support in March 2020 provided necessary relief to millions of Americans and helped the economy rebound more quickly than expected. Many of the Act’s key provisions have already expired but are still needed.”
Like always, I agree with the economists and hope that Congress can hear all of our cries to pass another stimulus package before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has been quiet since the election, I wonder why.
While it’s been reported that Mitch McConnell has taken over stimulus negotiations from the White House, Mnuchin stated today that he is still going to work with the Democrats to pass a Phase 4 disaster relief bill.
Mnuchin explained: “I can tell you Mark Meadows and I will be speaking with Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy this morning.”
He continued: “And we are going to come up with a plan to sit down with Pelosi and Schumer and try to get a targeted bill done for the people that really need it. And hopefully, the Democrats will work with us.”
Mnuchin also said: “I understand that the Democrats didn’t want us to do anything before the election because they didn’t want to do something that could be helpful to the president. But I had hoped, now that we’re now past the election, that the Democrats would now work with us.”
Hopefully, Mnuchin is ready to make a deal and can end his time as Treasury Secretary on a high note, helping millions of Americans get the stimulus relief they need so badly.
Finally, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made some incredible comments yesterday, offering hope that negotiations on a new stimulus bill are picking up steam.
Schumer explained: “So there’s been a little bit of a breakthrough in that McConnell’s folks are finally sitting down and talking to us.”
He continued: “Last night, they’ve agreed to sit down and the staff are going to sit down today or tomorrow to try to begin to see if we can get a real good Covid relief bill.”
President-Elect Joe Biden echoed Schumer’s call for more stimulus earlier in the week, stating: “For millions of Americans who’ve lost hours and wages or have lost jobs, we can deliver immediate relief, and it needs to be done quickly. Congress should come together and pass a relief package.”
I just hope that with the players finally back on the field, they can start working together to get us our much-needed stimulus disaster relief funds soon.
