With California’s eviction moratorium set to expire next week, Governor Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders agreed Friday to extend them until Sept. 30th.

It would also cover 100% of the back rent owed by many low-income residents whose finances were hurt within this last year.

Other states cover 100% of back rent, but California’s funding, $5.2 billion, is the largest in the country because it received the most federal funding.

Newsom stated, “protecting low-income tenants with a longer eviction moratorium and paying down their back-rent and utility bills, all thanks to the nation’s largest and most comprehensive rental assistance package, which I am eager to sign into law as soon as I receive it.”

In an agreement reached with state leaders, Newsom agreed to speed up the approval of this three-month extension so it could be done as early as Monday.

Meanwhile, Americans who qualify to start receiving “family stimulus checks” in just weeks, on July 15, can now easily enroll or opt-out of the new direct payments.
