The IRS recently announced that they are not planning to bring back a popular online tool that helped millions of Americans collect their stimulus checks.

With roughly 8 million Americans eligible for stimulus checks but never receiving them, the IRS created a tool last year that offered low-income people who aren’t usually required to file tax returns to provide their contact information.

Unfortunately, the online portal has been closed since November, and the IRS is not in any rush to get this vital stimulus service back up and running.

A spokesperson for the IRS explained: “there are no plans to bring back the tool but encouraged people to file returns so that they can claim a credit for all three payments as well as claim any other expanded credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit or the child tax credit.”

Aparna Ramesh, senior research manager at the California Policy Lab at UC Berkeley stated: “The stakes are high with billions of federal dollars not reaching low-income people across the country. The IRS reposting its online non-filers tool immediately would be a good first step.”

Hopefully, the IRS can get this service online once again, as it would help millions of struggling Americans access their much-needed stimulus checks.
