39 states have eliminated state taxes on unemployment benefits, leaving just 11 states that are still collecting tax money on these vital unemployment funds.
I’m so sorry if any of y’all live in the following states: Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.
Fortunately, unemployment claimants in all states are eligible to receive the federal $10,200 unemployment tax credit, which will arrive automatically for those that filed their tax returns before the American Rescue Plan was signed into law.
Julie Sforza-Smith, regulatory affairs program manager at The Tax Institute at H&R Block, explained: “State agencies are waiting for more information from the IRS.”
She continued: “Have a bit of patience right now. Let the IRS do what they need to do on their side and let the states come out and direct taxpayers what they need to do on the stateside.”
