Congressional members on both sides of the aisle are still hopeful that a stimulus package can be approved before the end of the year.

Republican Senator Richard Shelby explained earlier in the week that “it might not be a bad idea” to pass a Phase 4 disaster relief bill alongside the government funding bill.

Democratic Representative Ro Khanna, who we’ve talked about before on the channel, is still calling on Nancy Pelosi to accept the White House’s previous offer of a $1.8 trillion disaster relief bill.

He explained: “If we get $1.8 trillion? I think we would definitely want to make the deal. And it’s gonna be catastrophic if we don’t.”

With President-elect Joe Biden on board with the approval of another stimulus package before 2021, we’ll see if anything can get accomplished during this lame-duck session.

Meanwhile, Josh Gottheimer, Democratic Representative and co-chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, is growing frustrated with Congress’s lack of action on a Phase 4 disaster relief bill.

He explained: “We’re all out of patience because the country is out of patience. And rightfully so. People have had it.”

Gottheimer continued: “The bottom line is I’ve been talking to Democrats and Republicans who have made it clear they’ll get behind a package. We’re going to have to figure out how to get it done. McConnell’s going to have to move a little bit and we’re going to have to move a little bit.”

He also added that it was “really foolish” that a stimulus package could not be passed before the election.

Hopefully, Gottheimer can convince the rest of his mates in Congress to pass a new stimulus bill before the new year rolls around.

Finally, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made some very encouraging comments today about how a new stimulus package should exceed any previous bills, with the $3.4 trillion HEROES Act being the “starting point” of negotiations.

Schumer explained: “The HEROES Act should be the starting point, not an emaciated bill that prioritizes protections for corporations and considers the needs of American families as an afterthought.”

He continued: “The HEROES Act, passed in the House, does meet this moment. It doesn’t pick and choose who we’re going to help during the greatest health and economic crisis in decades.”

Pelosi added: “It has been our position all along to crush the virus, honor our heroes, put money in the pockets of the American people.”

This sounds great to me! With a starting point of $3.4 trillion, at the end of all this mess, we could see a stimulus package with a $4 trillion or even $5 trillion price tag.

Let’s just see if those stingy Republicans can back a massive stimulus package, instead of that skinny bill they keep passing around.
