If you want to be a freelance writer, gig worker, or contractor, you need to be prepared for the road ahead. It’s not going to be a picnic. At least, not at first. If you have what it takes to be your own boss and manage your own time (an issue freelancers face in on itself), then you can definitely make a killing.

That doesn’t mean you’re not going to make mistakes at first. We all do. So let’s get ahead of it by offering up some useful tips and insights into the world of freelancers… and the most common mistakes they make.

Not Knowing Your Worth

It’s really easy to get into the headspace of being a beginner and taking any and every job you can get. You wouldn’t want to do that with a 9–5, so you would especially not want to do that with freelancing. Being a gig worker means you have more freedom to choose which job you prefer and, not to mention, how much you want to make.

Remember, you’re a contractor and a small business owner (technically speaking), which means YOU are ultimately in charge of how much you’re worth. Don’t get discouraged or let anyone make you think you’re not worth a lot. Don’t get stuck with your low rates.
