Roughly 14,000 Kentucky residents who were overpaid unemployment benefits in 2020 can now apply for a waiver to avoid having to repay the money.
Letters mailed Friday by the Office of unemployment Insurance to those identified as receiving extra benefits include information on how much was overpaid and directions on applying for the waiver.
The overpayment issue was identified months ago, but Kentucky was one of the 10 states that did not allow unemployment overpayments to be waived without a change in the law.
Governor Andy Beshear said in a statement that he fought for the waiver, calling it the “right thing to do.”
He stated, “Without it, a lot of Kentuckians would have received collection notices, and in many cases, the money they received has already been spent, creating an additional hardship for folks in the toughest times.”
This is such great news that the state was able to recognize their mistake.
