The IRS recently reported that during the holiday season of 2020, they had a backlog of paper tax filings exceeding 12 million returns.

Kenneth Corbin, a commissioner of the wage and investment division at the IRS, explained: “In 2020, the IRS found itself in uncharted waters, as did the entire nation.”

He continued: “The pandemic presented some of the greatest challenges to the IRS in its history, both in terms of being able to carry out our mission and in protecting the health and safety of taxpayers and our own workforce.”

Corbin also explained why Americans should switch from paper to electronic tax filings: “We are hopeful the benefits of the electronic filing have been reinforced with the public and that the experience of 2020 encourages traditional paper return filers to convert to electronic filing.”

With so many issues plaguing the IRS regarding paper tax filings, it might be best to file digitally this year to ensure that you get all of your stimulus check funds on your upcoming tax return.
